In addition to my research work, I’ve worked with several programs within the larger community.
Fencing
In the Champaign-Urbana community, I was an active participant in the Fencing Illini and Point Fencing Club in downtown Champaign. I fence epeĆ©. I’ve also served as an instructor and assistant instructor for the youth fencing class, on again and off again since 2008.
After moving to Maryland, I have continued fencing at the BFC, and I am now a regular at the new Savage Fencing Center (https://www.savagefencingclub.com/)! Come fence with us!
APL STEM Community
I am happy to be involved in our APL STEM community (https://www.jhuapl.edu/Education/EducationOutreach) helping mentor ASPIRE students and helping mentor in the college prep program. I’ve recently started assisting with the Introduction to Programming Using Python course.
Homebrewing and Working in the Kitchen
I also enjoy homebrewing beer, and have been at it for over 175 batches, ranging from non-beers like ciders and wines to classic German and English styles. In addition, I enjoy fermenting pickles and bread, and cooking all sorts of things. Side note, I highly recommend visiting some of the fine local breweries in the area, such as Sapwood Cellars and Black Flag Brewing Company.
Illinois Neuroengineering Community
I was very involved in our nascent Neuroengineering program at the University of Illinois, participating in the student planning committee for the first Neuroengineering Symposium at the University of Illinois in 2010-2011. Our student committee planned and executed a one-day symposium at the Beckman Institute, including a poster session, invited speakers, laboratory tours, and demonstrations.
